Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a punishing climbing game, a homage to Jazzuo's 2002 B-Game classic 'Sexy Hiking'. You move the hammer with the mouse (or touch), and that's all there is. With practice, you'll be able to jump, swing, climb and fly. Great mysteries and a wonderful reward await the master hikers who reach the top of the mountain. Listen to Bennett's philosophical observations about the struggle as you make your way up.

Our Expert Score

98/100

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is less of a game and more of a philosophical trial. It is an exercise in frustration, perseverance, and the nature of loss. The premise—climbing a mountain of junk in a cauldron using only a sledgehammer—is absurd, yet the physics are so precise that every failure feels entirely like your own fault. This makes the eventual successes feel more rewarding than almost any other game on the market.

Bennett Foddy’s calm, detached narration as you tumble down the mountain is the icing on the cake. He provides quotes about the value of failure and the history of frustrating games, which either serves as a comfort or a subtle taunt depending on your mood. On mobile, the touch controls are surprisingly viable once you build the muscle memory. It is a modern classic that everyone should try at least once, if only to see how long they can last before their spirit breaks.

An experience I will never forget
Mon Dec 30 2019 RileyRooShampoo

When I started playing this game, I saw nothing more than a bad port of a steam game. After my roughly 8 hour play through of the game though, I realized that this version perfectly encapsulates what the game is meant to be. The controls are purposefully difficult to fit the brutal learning curve, the game is infuriating with it being very easy to lose progress, and all of Bennett’s quotes as you continue to climb. Everything the game is meant to be is here. But why is this game so worthy of 5 stars if it is so aggravatingly difficult? Well, what makes this game so special is the overall lesson you purposefully undergo by climbing this mountain. It teaches you the art of getting over it. If you think about all the things people try to accomplish, why do so many people fail? They are afraid and annoyed at the possibility of difficulty or failure. They would rather continue to live life the way it is then try to accomplish something meaningful because they believe that the end goal won’t be worth the work. Through this game I taught myself to stop caring about my failures. It taught me that no matter how difficult something may be you will eventually get over it with enough time. This game has taught me to believe in myself, and not give up on things that I thought didn’t really matter if I didn’t complete them. It’s taught me that anything I go for is like a mountain, with many moments of failure and progress. Finally then when you reach the end, everything you worked for makes your life better, just like the character at the end of the game.

This was an experience.

It is rare for me to come across a game that is excruciatingly challenging, but has a reason for being. “Getting Over It” is not just a difficult game to play, but a testament for a player to learn that failure is okay. Every time that I fell from high up, sure I lost plenty of my progress, but I got faster at observing and adapting to my surroundings that it didn’t take me too long to get back to where I originally was. What each section of the game that seemed like an impossible jump or climb, later became just another bump in the road on my journey, because I’ve seen what failure looked and felt like from that before. This maybe an homage to another game (similar in gameplay) called “Sexy Climbing”, but Bennett Foddy has put together something with his own original spin and artistic liberties that makes this game differ from it enough. In fact, I will go as far as to say that this is one of the greatest experiences that I’ve ever had playing a video game. When it comes to negatives… I honestly wouldn’t change a single thing about it. 10/10

Needs some small improvement

Okay, I feel like I was a bit harsh on this game and didn’t do it justice, so here’s what I actually think about it. It’s what you would expect from a ported iOS app game. Is kinda down graded and it’s not the sharpest looking game, but the new update added a new feature which I feel like helps. I also feel like the graphics are slightly improved. Or more shiny. Now I don’t wanna brag or anything, but I’ve beaten this game at lest eight times and I feel like I know the ins and outs of this game. From here on I don’t thing you can fix the controls much, (thanks for trying Bennet) it’s just that dragging the hammer all the way around on a small little phone screen isn’t the easiest thing to do, bud if you have an iPad and play this game. I actually think that would be best. However, one that’s still a problem for me. Lag. Again with how many times I’ve played and beat this game, and while this is a hard thing to remove, the way the game deals with it is just weird. So when the games fps is slow, the game makes up for it by going faster. Since there’s no real time in the game you just swing really fast. At the radio tower you move really fast and even in some cases it crashes. But, I feel like that’s just a side effect of having this huge game on iOS with engine limitations. Cause there’s nothing like getting on the side of the tower and knocking yourself down all the way to the bucket. If you continue to make improvements this could be a fairly solid game. It’s a fun game. To Bennet: no hard feelings. Overall, it’s the B-est B-game of them all. B+ Sorry if this was really lengthy, just needed to point some things out.

Great Game, Worth It

I downloaded this game a couple of years ago and beat it once with a time of around 6 hours. I (obviously) was frustrated at the game but since I beat it I put it down thinking I was done with it. It stayed in my home screen for around a year and I never looked at it until one day when I decided to revisit it. This was both great and agonizing as the parts of the game that I despised were back to haunt me. But, as time went on I kept beating it and falling then climbing back up and beating it again. 3 successful climbs grew to 15 then 25 and soon I began wondering if I had it in me to get the golden pot. As time went on I kept getting wins and my pot kept getting more shiny. Once it was fully golden I decided to keep going and I’m glad I did as 6 hours of gameplay to win once became 30, then 20, 10, until I reached my record time of 4 minutes to beat the game. I understand that that isn’t nearly as good as world record material but I feel proud of my accomplishment. If you left the game thinking it was too difficult, try it again because it’s worth it.

Are you thinking of buying a new phone?
Tue Apr 13 2021 TitusMk2

If you have been drooling over any of the latest iPhones but can’t justify the upgrade because your current phone is good enough, download this game! It has all the challenges of the pc game but with the added difficulty of no fast movements! Without a mouse, you can’t simply flick your hammer in a tight circle. Every move must be dragged across your grubby screen as fast as your finger allows. Forget about a quick swipe from the bottom of the screen, because that will close the app and your poor, cauldron-legged man will be frozen in pause limbo until you reopen the app, unpause the game, and witness him plummet back to the bottom. Devote enough time to this game and I can guarantee you’ll be in the market for a new phone sooner than later. Seriously, as someone who has beaten the PC version, this game is unplayable in comparison. I haven’t given up on it yet, but I’m one of the few who never got flustered on the pc game, so your mileage may vary. If you raged at all playing it on PC, this game is not for you.

One of my favorite games. Five Stars.

This game was really frustrating and lil' bit of rage when I played for the first time. But with the time I learned that it was my fault about feeling like that, so now I don't get frustrated very much anymore. This game is like a therapy, like if I fall from top to the bottom I have to do it good like last time I got to the top. Playing this game without hearing Bennett Foddy we will not learn nothing, I know it's annoying hearing almost all the time that guy as a commenter but it’ll make the game worse. This game is about of practice of moving good the hammer with your thumbs and getting the domain of the game. Getting Over It is not about getting over the mountain, is getting over the anger to not feeling like that anymore. To control your bad emotions. A tip is to take a breath and think about how did you feel about getting very up. I beat this game more than five times. Sorry if you don’t like my opinion but, this game is worth it when you get over it and feeling the best relief you've never had. In addiction I would like a sequel or a new feature of the game like custom mountains by players or a multiplayer race about who is going to be the first to get over that mountain. I don’t know how to express my opinion about this game but simply I will say that even the game is really frustrating and raging, it’s worth it to play it when you’re bored, is very entertaining and interesting. Thank you for reading my review of this incredible game.

Should allow for controller support (but not in a average way)
Sun Apr 09 2023 bubble will pop

Okay, first off, I just want to say that I haven’t completed this game so I have nothing to say about the difficulty of it. Instead, I’m going to be focusing on one thing: Controls. You see, I’m a person who likes controller implementations on mobile. This would benefit this game so much. But, instead of your average “push in one direction to turn,” instead I want something better: flick stick. There is this thing called flick stick on steam in which it makes it so that when you turn your stick, at least in fps games, it turns to that direction. That would be such a great feature, as it would allow for us to mimic mouse controls. But, I have another idea for the other stick. This one would be able to pogo you up, and make the game possible. One final thing. Make it so that when you stop moving a stick, it stays in its previous position. This would make everything so much easier. If you could do these things, that would be great. I know you can do it bennet!

A great game (if you know what you're getting yourself into)
Sun May 12 2019 diddlydaddlyneighboreeno

The first thing that comes to my mind is the graphics. It's great, for an IOS game. But there's just too much bugs. There are several issues that plagued the PC version, and they've only gotten worse on the IOS. The controls are mediocre at best, but at most times, it's just too sensitive. (And no, lowering the sensitivity does not work.) I usually found myself to be jerked off a mountain, like my hammer had a mind of its own. Carefully placing yourself on things is extremely difficult, which makes many parts of the game almost impossible to get past. That on top of the camera bounce, makes this game extremely harder than it needs to be. (And it was already very difficult.) there's a line between a rage game and a poorly made one, and Getting Over it sits directly in between. There's a lot of good things going on here, but it's a really bumpy ride. I would refrain from buying this if you're a casual gamer. If you really want a challenge, if you want to get so frustrated you want to gorge your eyes out, then go ahead.
