Our Expert Score

82/100

Fish Tycoon 2 Virtual Aquarium is a deeply satisfying evolution of the classic 'real-time' pet simulation. For fans of the original, this sequel delivers everything you loved—breeding, selling, and decorating—but with significantly more depth. With over 400 unique species of fish to discover, the 'gotta catch 'em all' aspect is incredibly strong. It’s a game that lives in your pocket; your fish continue to grow and breed even when the app is closed, creating a persistent world that feels alive.

The tycoon elements are surprisingly robust. You aren't just a fish keeper; you're a business owner. Researching food types, advertising your shop, and renovating your store are all necessary steps to lure in customers and fund your more exotic breeding experiments. While it starts simple with basic eggs, the progression toward raising sharks and rare koi is a rewarding journey. It’s the perfect 'zen' game—low stress, high reward, and visually charming.

It’s cool

If you ever played the OG fish tycoon then this is a pretty nice upgraded version. Getting things might be a little tough when you first start out but that’s the point..It’s nice that when you have rare fish in the beginning you can revive them for free by watching an ad rather than using in game currency or just throwing them away. I saw someone complain about how to get a 3rd fish tank..almost every time you login you get 2 gems..they add up pretty quickly. Also, by remembering to “login” every day, I unlocked the 3rd tank for free as a “daily reward”. Once you discover the golden guppy just mass breed/sell those and you’ll get money pretty quick cause they sell for like $155 each. I’ve unlocked/purchased everything except decorations. Now I just have to discover all the fish. My only main complaint is how many bottles of ick or fungal medicine it takes to cure the fish! It’s ridiculous. It makes NO sense. Sometimes it takes one dose, other times it takes 5 or 10. It’s stupid, that’s my main complaint. And maybe add more content in the future.

The app needs updating

I want to love this game. I put over $50 of my own money into this game and I continuously have problems with the tech of this game. It’s absolutely ridiculous. I have pretty much achieved everything in this game other than discovering all the breeds. So what I do is breed the guppy (worth $361) then sell to get many coins. I use those coins to purchase eggs. 6 times now, I’ve purchased 4-6 rare eggs ($1,500 each) and 4-6 uncommon eggs ($450 each). Then I will place them in my two EMPTY selling tanks. I will go back on the app 30 minutes later, because that is when the eggs will have hatched to find them all completely gone. I’ve complained about it once and did receive coin compensation, but it’s quite ridiculous how many times it’s happened to me. ALSO, if I’m on the app too long and do too many rounds of breeding/selling (I use instahatch/instagrow to speed it up) the app begins to malfunction and I lose “connection” and it states it’s due to my internet connection. I promise, it’s not that. I have never had any “internet connection” issues while watching shows on my phone or playing any other games. It would only happen if I was on the app 30+ minutes. They really need to fix these issues. It’s a shame because otherwise this game would be great.

Ridiculous

I used to play this game on my computer as a child so naturally I was very excited to find it on my phone. I enjoyed playing it for all of 2 days until I realized rare (and regular) fish do not survive early game for more then an hour unattended, and without a zillion health solutions and revivals causing you to spend nearly every coin and gem you make just to keep them alive. (because the filtration system and other items are too expensive.)Buying the temperature regulator,I thought might be helpful, it’s not. Lol. 500 coins down the drain for fish to still die anyways. It costs like 1000 coins to get new research, food, and other tanks. And if you thought you could just watch ads to build coins, sure give it a shot! gets you and makes you think it’ll make you a bunch of coins, but after you watch enough ads, the game tells you you cannot watch any more adds for the whole campaign. Leaving you to try to revive your dead fish with the two gems you get from the stupid seashells. Lol I’m raging too hard at the ridiculousness of this game for someone in their 20’s but you know what this game is lame. Now you know. Thanks for attending my ted talk.

Fun, but heavily relies on the player watching ads to get coins
Thu Dec 26 2024 Fixitbro2023

The game is fun and all, but in the beginning 95% of the gameplay is you watching ads so you can collect coins to make necessary upgrades, keep fish healthy, etc. which in my opinion ruins the game. I hope to see more ways to make coins other than selling fish (which hardly makes you money), collecting daily gifts, spending your own hard earned money, and watching ads. Since the game is based in a fish store maybe adding products to sell within the store would be a great way to make more coins. I don’t really like that you have to treat your fish with medicines multiple times to get their health up and that none give a guarantee to treat all your fish. Health boost should bring up all fish health 25% each bottle, ick treatment should bring up all fish health by 50% each bottle, and the fungal or bacterial treatment should bring it up 100% each bottle. Obviously the bottles should cost a bit more the better they are at treating the tank, but I feel that should be something to implement instead of having no guarantee any of the treatments will treat all the fish.

More gems?

Okay I just have this one complaint. I will have to watch 3 to 6 hours worth of ads in order to get a third fish tank. Or pay $20. Okay the game is awesome otherwise, the coins are pretty easy to accumulate between selling fish or watching ads. Even the ads seem to be worth more in coins. But the ones for gems, only get you two gems at a time. And the magic shell that appears in the tank once an hour is only two gems. But it costs a thousand gems to get that third fish tank. So, do I wait forever? Watch a million ads? Or pay? Why? Why can’t it be part of the game instead of lousy ads? It’s like your genius stopped there. Otherwise the store is awesome, I love the customers they’re cute :) I love the way you can adjust the price and they still keep buying lol. And I also love the attractions that earn you money too (but not gems either. Maybe something to add?) OR there was another game where you could exchange gems and coins. That seems like it would be fair! Please consider in your next update, more gems! Or lower gem prices...

Like the game, some ads are creepy
Fri Jun 14 2024 SleepyZaps

I enjoy playing. Some of the ads are 4 pages long and don’t give an option to not sell your data. It collects… not sure what because it doesn’t disclose this, and then says staying on the page is me consenting to the data collection and selling. Huh? Not comfortable at all with that. I tried just closing the app and restarting it, and it bugged out several times afterwards. I had to restart it several times to get it to function again. I don’t mind not getting coins, as I didn’t finish the creepy ad, but needing to reload it again and again afterwards sucked. I don’t mind the other ads for games. They net you 50 coins per ad. One ad is forced between selling fish and switching back to the tank. Annoying, but not a deal breaker for a game I like. It’s always for their other cooking game, and there isn’t a timer forcing you to stay there. The fish breeding I really like, it’s fun to collect and sell many kinds of fish. This was a childhood game I’ve loved for a long time, and finding it for my iPad was really nice. It’s fun, aside from the creepy invasive ad.

Wanted to give 3 stars
Thu Jul 25 2019 Dis other guy right here

I wanted t give the game 3 stars at least. But this is why I only gave it 2... let me first start by saying I live the concept of this game I also like the graphics and the visuals on this game as well. So many types of fish you can collect and sell. But my first problem was the amount of time it takes to do anything in this game. For a fish to become an adult it has to take at least 30min, when a fish is pregnant and the amount of time for her to have her baby fish another the 30 min you can only sell your fish for 2min at a time and then your employee takes an hour break in between... okay I’ll still play the game I’m thinking, it’s a tycoon game... but the biggest problem was how quick your fish die... like I said the amount of time to do anything in the game leaves you with nothing to do unless you wanna be watching ads to earn a small amount of coins while you’re waiting for your fish to be born or become an adult exc... so when I don’t play the game for 3 hours log back in and find 5 of my fish dead! When I click autopsy it says conditions in the water. Game is to much without giving much but a pretty colorful show. 2 stars.

It’s good but.. why are ads more part of the game?

The music is soothing and I really like the graphics. And it’s interesting to see the different breeds of fish. I really wish however you can get decent coin from selling fish instead of watching ads. The coin amount for ads is two to three times the amount of selling fish. 😐 Is it not fish tycoon game? Its so so so weird to me you don’t make enough coin from selling fish in a fish game and rely on ads alone. I also agree with other players the items that are supposed to keep the fish alive don’t seem like they work at all and they’re super expensive, and that rare fish need to be check constantly. Stop replying to each person that they didn’t do enough for their fish in the game when they said they watch countless ads, it means there’s an unstable economy in the game and it is not the players fault. You should also add more to the shop itself (not fish tanks only) to decorate the shop with and be able to dress up/create your own manager character that I think is in blue at the counter?
