Seeing the game that birthed a legend in such a polished state is a treat. Square Enix did a fantastic job with the 'Pixel Remaster' series, and FF1+ is the perfect entry point. The new sprites manage to look 'classic' while popping on modern retina displays, and the rearranged music is breathtaking.
While the gameplay is simple by today's standards—it is a game from 1987, after all—the quality-of-life improvements like quick saves and the map feature make it much more accessible. It’s a short, tight experience that every RPG fan should play at least once to see where the crystals first started glowing.
