Dungeon Defense : The Gate is a masterclass in the 'reverse' tower defense subgenre. Instead of playing the hero, you are the dungeon's guardian, tasked with fending off endless waves of 'heroes' who want to loot your home. It’s an addictive blend of action, retro aesthetic, and deep RPG progression. The gameplay loop is incredibly satisfying: you defend your gate in real-time combat, then use your earnings to hire mercenaries, research new technologies, and upgrade your monsters.
What sets this game apart is its commitment to being a 'game first.' In an era of aggressive microtransactions, Dungeon Defense feels like a breath of fresh air with its unobtrusive monetization and lack of paywalls. The 2D retro graphics and sounds perfectly capture that classic arcade feel, while the 'Rebirth' system provides nearly infinite replayability. It’s the kind of game that rewards strategic thinking—finding synergies between different mercenaries is the only way to survive the brutal 'Hell' difficulties.
Charming retro-style graphics and sounds
Deep RPG-style upgrade and weapon systems
Dozens of mercenaries with unique synergies
Challenging 'Hell' difficulties for veteran players
Solo-developed with fair, non-intrusive mechanics
Don't just focus on raw damage. Look for synergies between your mercenaries. Some monsters provide buffs to others' attack speed or critical hit chance. Always invest in 'Research' early to increase your gold gain per wave.
When you reach a point where progression slows down, use the Rebirth feature. This resets your current run but grants you permanent currencies to spend on massive, game-changing upgrades that make your next run much stronger.
No, the game is a premium title with no forced ads and very unobtrusive micro-transactions.
The game is based off the concept that you control a creature of your choosing and you have to defend your dungeon against knights, mages, archers, etc. You can also hire mercenaries to help defend against the onslaught. You can upgrade your dungeon and earn more money, have more health and more. This has great gameplay mechanics and doesn't require an internet connection. This is great because I usually only play while going somewhere. This game is one of the few mobile games that I would be willing to pay money for. Money can easily breeze through the game for you if you can pay. Most of the features, though, are accessible by just playing the game (might take some time though!). Very fun and I remember playing this a couple months back and trying to find it on the App Store. All in all, I would highly recommend you try this game.
This game, despite other reviews, is a great game. IT IS NOT ENTIRELY AUTOMATED. When defending your castle, the character you choose is also a defender. Tapping the screen lets you shoot arrows, or fireballs, or whatever. Most of the time, your character is also the strongest one. However, once you play it for a few minutes and gain some mercenaries, it becomes entirely possible to not tap the screen once and still have a fully health dungeon. Anyways, this game is not for you people who like to buy a game that you spend only five minutes on before deleting. It is meant for further progression. Everything from the dungeon upgrades to the diverse weapon system to the unique skills and special attacks make it a great game. IAPs are also basically non-existent. Overall, this game is a great addition to anyone’s game library.
This is a rare thing: an actual game that you play that doesn’t try to get you to spend money every five minutes or artificially stall your progress to force you to spend money on upgrades. You don’t even need to be online to play. You get five dudes, and they fling things at adventurers trying to invade your dungeon, and you try to grind out ways to make things run more efficiently. Good for numbers geeks and people who are a little more on the OCD end of things. It’s like running little battle simulations where you can tweak stuff to try and get better results each time. Much more interactive than other ‘idle’ games, and the math behind it all seems well thought out. I like the style of the graphics. They fit well with the theme, and the actual action when a battle gets going is fun to watch. Coding seems solid too. I haven’t had a single crash or glitch, and even the tool tips update on the fly. I’ve played a lot of games where the devs get sloppy and don’t put the time in on those little finishing touches, so good job.
I don’t understand the hype over this game. It is beyond boring to play with zero instructions on what to do. There is so much that has to be done after a dungeon is cleared and there’s no guidance on what any of it is. You spend more time doing upgrades, selling things, learning about your dungeon, and reinforcing it (none of which seem to make a difference) than you do actually defending the dungeon. Don’t let the teaser video fool you, the actual play is entirely automated, which means you have no control over what enemies are targeted or when your guys attack. I watched enemies make it to the dungeon wall when they could have been taken out earlier. Your sole job during battle is to activate special abilities once they fill up. Once you sit through the automated fight it’s back to spending five minutes upgrading stuff with no instructions, then repeat. I’ve had more fun watching paint dry. It hasn’t had an update in a year so apparently the developer is done. Spend your money elsewhere.
When I first played this game, I instantly begun having fun. The fighting sound effects are almost like asmr and the difficulty gets progressively harder which gives a challenge. I’ve put many hours into this game and still don’t get bored of it, something I can’t say for many other games I see today. The level up process is super convenient and you can even prioritize an ability for your teammates to auto-upgrade. Overall, this is my favorite mobile game to play whether I’m bored, in need of a time spender, or just for fun.
Okay so I barely ever write a review, but I just had to write one for this. So sometimes in school I have a lot of spare time, and mostly all of my games need service to play in which I don’t at school. So this is literally the only game I play in school EVER. I’ve been playing for about close to a month now and I’m on Day 300. I really like the whole functionality of the game, cause there’s always something there for you to do. It’s just a lot of fun and you guys have to try it out.
Would pay $10 for this app. Action-jammed!!! Epically deep. Thanks for the update! Just one thing... understandably, it will kill your battery over time. Dungeon Maker is by the same developer, superbly deep as well, but seems much nicer on the battery with somewhat fewer enemies. And yes, I’ve turned down almost all the options on this game. I’ve played months of Dungeon Maker with very little if any impact on the battery. Either way the developer deserves a sale!
Starting off this game is free, which blows my mind because I would straight up pay easily at least $10 for this, its that amazing. its the best tower defense game I’ve ever played, after each battle there’s soooooo much to do! Theres your main guy to level up, equip and mod your weapons, technology to reaearch, different parts of your castle to upgrade, its crazy! Theres no ads, no pay to win, this game is absolutely flawless and perfect.
