Doki Doki Literature Club! starts as a charming dating simulator where you join a high school club to meet cute girls and write poetry. However, the game quickly takes a dark, meta-fictional turn into psychological horror. It breaks the fourth wall in ways rarely seen in gaming, challenging the player's perception of the characters and the game itself. It is a cult classic that has redefined the visual novel genre for a modern audience.

Our Expert Score

95/100

Doki Doki Literature Club! remains one of the most significant visual novels ever created, and its mobile port is surprisingly seamless. What begins as a saccharine-sweet dating simulator quickly unravels into a terrifying exploration of mental health and artificial intelligence. The transition is so masterfully handled that even if you know the 'twist' is coming, the execution still manages to be deeply unsettling.

The characters—Sayori, Natsuki, Yuri, and Monika—are written with a layer of depth that initially feels like anime tropes but reveals something much more human and tragic. The game's ability to manipulate the 'system' and speak directly to the player is its crowning achievement. It is a mandatory experience for anyone interested in how games can subvert expectations and tell stories that simply wouldn't work in any other medium.

A Ported Love Letter To DDLC

For many years I have enjoyed watching people play this game. Unfortunately, I never had a personal computer myself. When I heard that it was available to play on phone, I was delighted. Serenity Forge does a very good job of porting it. I was very happy to get a chance to start and complete my own playthrough. There were a few things I noticed that may admittedly be not possible to achieve on IOS. One I was particularly sad about was that does not seem to be a way to copy Monika’s save file to get her dialogue about trying to add it back to the game in Act 3. But along with that there were many things I was pleasantly surprised with, such as how they handled not choosing Monika in Act 2 with a Captcha that seems to be mobile specific. It was very refreshing to see new content in a game made over half a decade ago. In any case, it makes me incredibly happy to have Doki Doki Literature Club available on the App Store, and free as well. I will be looking forward to seeing what Team Salvatore and Serenity Forge accomplish in the future, and they will have my gratitude for making the game accessible to more and more players.

Nothing can ever beat the actual files on your pc desktop, BUT THIS IS SO CREATIVE

Okay, I’ve loved this game since I was eleven and now I’m sixteen, I’ve never been able to play it because it’d only been available on pc which I never had access too, and when it came out on console I never bought it because I didn’t want to buy it not on pc because of the whole deleting the character files thing. I wanted to do pc so badly because I really wanted the experience of deleting the files from my own desktop, but since this was 3$ I decided to just download it and see what it does do instead, and I gotta say it’s cool they give you an entire fake desktop. ALTHOUGH, I think it’d be so much cooler if it actually was able to access your files on your phone and you delete it from there, that’d make it more psychological based since it’s not all just in the one app, it’s on your phone in general. BUT THIS IS STILL SO COOL I LOVE THIS GAME DAWG

My Kickstarter for visual novels. As a fan of mascot horror, I looked into this game, intrigued by how a cutesy romance game could possibly be a psychological horror game. It turns out I wasn't very familiar with the yandere VN genre... ---SPOILER ALERT--- I was thoroughly shaken when I got to Sayori's death screen. Although I was mentally prepared for smth like this, the atmosphere, music, and sudden glitches inadvertently gave me the chills from head to toe. More importantly, I felt real dread and depression wash over me. The fact that visual novels establish an emotional connection between you and the characters like no mascot horror game can, only for that character to be snatched away from you, felt like a real loss to me. The same goes for other characters. As I watched the ending screen, listening to Monika singing "Your Reality", I thought to myself: This game is so sad, yet so beautiful. Thank you for letting me fall in love with visual novels.

Woohoo!!!

I’ve been a DDLC fan for years, so seeing it finally released on mobile honestly made my whole day. I love that more people can experience the game now, especially those who don’t have a PC or laptop. The moment I saw it was available, I literally rushed to tell my friends because I was that excited 😭 A few of them had been wanting to play for so long but didn’t have the right setup, and as soon as I told them it was on mobile, they were SO happy. This release is such a win for the community! On top of that, the mobile version runs so well. Everything runs smoothly, the visuals look great, and nothing feels watered down just because it’s on a phone. It keeps the same atmosphere, tension, and charm as the original game. Absolutely worth downloading 💗

This game is outstanding

This game is just perfect I love everything about I just finished the game and I’m in tears the ending song AGHHH monikas voice sounds so cute (sorta sounds like Mabel from gravity falls) I loved every second playing this I actually encountered 10 rare things while playing that have a small chance of happening yes I counted! I used to be obsessed watching play throughs when I was younger but playing it for my self made me just so happy I wouldn’t be surprised if my tablet would stop working from all the tears on it (I would of played on my phone but I’d rather have a big screen :D) thank you SO much for putting this game on mobile and this game is just, again so good! Thank you for reading my review and I hope you enjoy or enjoyed this game as much as I did

Doki Doki Literature Club is one of the most surprising and memorable games I’ve played so far, What starts as a cute, simple visual novel quickly turns into something much deeper and more intense, completely changing your expectations. I absolutely loved how the game plays with storytelling and makes the player feel involved, especially through the special endings and hidden paths, which give it great replay value. My favorite character is Yuri because she’s quiet, intelligent, and deeply passionate about literature and poems. Which to me makes her feel complex and real rather than just a stereotype quit girl. The way the music and atmosphere shift perfectly with the story, adding to the emotional tension throughout the game! 10/10 would recommend!!!!!

Just amazing.

Although in my opinion the sprites look a bit sloppy, the way the game handles everything and how Monika is more a morally gray character rather than a full blown evil villain who wants to destroy this game? Masterpiece. Spoilers ahead for any new players reading this; I love how Monika, in the ending I got first, actually realized her mistake when you delete her file. She realizes that she didn’t need to go this far for a world that she didn’t belong in— her words— and fixes everything so that you could have a better .. way of seeing everything ending, kind of. There’s so many endings as well, because I assume that there’s much more dialogue you can access to. Thank you for reading this whoever, and this is an amazing game overall.

I grew up watching people play this game and I always wanted to play it. I originally bought it for my PlayStation but I got so lazy to just use the controller that I just never played. I bought it originally 2 years ago for context. As soon as I got my iPad and found it that it was available on the App Store I immediately took it as a sign to download it and play it. Took me a couple days because I genuinely love the characters and how well they’re written and didn’t want anything bad to happen to them but in total it took me about 3 or so days to finish? Genuinely one of my favorite games forever. Crying screaming and throwing up. My seven year old self would be sobbing if she found out that DDLC was on mobile now!
