Our Expert Score

85/100

Darkestville Castle is a love letter to the golden era of point-and-click adventures. If you grew up on Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle, you will feel right at home with Cid, the charmingly wicked demon protagonist. The game’s sense of humor is its strongest suit—it’s dark, self-aware, and consistently funny, delivered through excellent voice acting that brings the hand-painted world to life.

The puzzles are classic 'adventure logic,' meaning they require a bit of outside-the-box thinking without being unfairly obscure. The Tim Burton-esque art style is a visual treat, providing a whimsical yet gothic atmosphere. The only minor gripe is that certain aspect ratios on modern mobile devices can occasionally clip the UI, but the core experience of over 7 hours of narrative-driven gameplay is well worth the entry price for any fan of the genre.

It doesn’t save your progress correctly!!
Sat Apr 20 2019 Solrisen

There is no option to save the game yourself. It “sort of” auto saves, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been put back at the stupid gate to the underworld. I am so angry at this game! I get through it, move on, exit the game to do something else... and I’m back at the bloody gate!!! Over and over. And this isn’t even just a bug; there is literally no way offered for you to save your own progress. I wanted to like this game, I really did. Will come back and rewrite this review if and when the developers get reasonable about letting users save the game; till then, I’m not even going to bother trying to play it further!!

Good game/not great on ipad mini

I enjoyed the game. However it was difficult to play since the screen didn’t fit correctly on my ipad mini. The screen was cut off on the left and right sides which made it difficult to exit rooms and to choose options on the dialogue trees. Talking to the portal door was especially hard since I couldn’t see the numbers at all. I also ended up looking for hints online because I was afraid that I might have missed an item I couldn’t see. Like I said I liked the game, it just needs to be fixed if you are expecting people to pay for it.

Wasted money because of screen issue

The video does not fit the ipad screen. Regardless of ipad type. It cuts off both sides which make it difficult to play and you can not read the beginning of any sentences. Otherwise it would be a fun little game.

TOTAL disappointment

I was absolutely stoked about this game, I rarely purchase games, but this was exactly what I wanted. The screen is clipped on both the left and right sides rendering some things unusable. I can’t view my inventory items fully, a lot of the dialog is clipped so if I can’t use audio I’m screwed, there is a screen that you can’t even reach because of it, so it’s impossible to finish the game. This has, apparently, been a known issue for awhile and nothing has been done, so, Apple is allowing a defective product to be sold. This is a shame, it would be such an awesome game.

The glue solvent and 25 year old liquor bottles keep disappearing from inventory

I am playing this game now...and have had to restart several times due to these items disappearing from my inventory. Please fix this... thank you. I will watch for a reply. I love point and click adventures and was so excited to find one I hadn't played... 🥺 After trying again, it is the seventh item picked up that gets lost in inventory... Bc that item will not move to the second line of inventory. Please fix this

Classic point-and-click

I’m a big fan of games like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc. so this game was perfect for me. I only had to consult a walkthrough twice, and both of those instances were due to my own impatience. All of the “puzzles” made sense. I hope these folks make more games like this.

Fun traditional adventure game

Played and saved flawlessly. Funny and fun. Great and unique puzzles. Awesome characters, board design, voiceovers, music, cartooning, etc. Great amount of playtime. Lots of items to collect and characters to talk to.

Screen doesn’t fit

I assumed a game 12 plus years old would have already patched the issues with the game being cut off on both sides of the screen. As all the reviews mention. Pull the game off the App Store if it’s defective!! Or at least make it free. I tried it on the biggest screen iPad they make, so I’m not sure what iOS device it was made for. Crazy
