Chess Score Pad is an indispensable utility for the competitive chess player. While not a game itself, it replaces the clunky paper scorebooks used in tournaments. The interface is designed for speed; you can record moves with just a few taps, allowing you to stay focused on the board rather than the pen.
The ability to export games to PGN format is a game-changer for post-match analysis. You can easily send your games to an engine or a coach. It handles all the technicalities like move numbering and special notations (castling, en passant) perfectly. It’s a niche tool, but for its specific audience, it is executed flawlessly.

Tap the piece you moved, then tap the destination square. The app automatically formats the move in standard algebraic notation.
Enter moves for both White and Black. The app tracks the current position and ensures only legal moves can be recorded.
Check with your local tournament director, as many now allow digital scorekeepers that don't have engines.
Does everything in an efficient and intuitive fashion, I’m amazed I never found this before. You must get tons of suggestions, I was wondering if you might include the ability to add ??, !!, !? And ?! notations to moves. This would greatly help with later analysis. It is wonderful to see a developer that provides regular feedback to customers. Thank you again for the wonderful app!
Simple design and it works for what I need it for. Not much else to say. I hope the developer(s) continue to maintain it and even add to it over time.
Any chance to get different board colors or at least lighten the dark green squares a little? The black pieces kind of get lost against the dark green background is my only complaint and I really like using the app. This would make it better.
This app has a lot of great features for what it allows you to do as far as recording chess games. What I would like to see added is a built in player list for those club players you play the most.
Great app. The convenience of recoding moves is fantastic. Two suggestions for the developer: 1. It would be great to be able to save games in .pgn format automatically. 1. See if you can get this app approved for USCF tournaments.
App is great, but it would be even better if it had iCloud capabilities so that all your saved games can be pulled up on any device.
Don't want to keep a dozen chess boards set up? Record your games here, and take with you. Legal for all sanctioning organizations, no analysis, chess no engine.
We got the app. It looks good so far. Two comments: 1. I couldn’t use ‘Save to Files’ in iPad if the result is draw (1/2). 2. Didn’t see the option to load a game.
