Our Expert Score

84/100

This version of Backgammon is exactly what a classic board game app should be: clean, fast, and fair. The developer clearly prioritized the 'feel' of the game—the dice rolls have a satisfying sound, and the checkers move with a snap that mimics real play. For a game that is thousands of years old, the UI feels surprisingly modern and uncluttered.

The AI difficulty is well-tuned; 'Easy' is great for beginners learning the ropes, while 'Hard' actually uses proper probability strategies that will challenge veteran players. The online matchmaking is snappy, and I rarely encountered any lag. If you’re looking for a reliable, no-nonsense way to play one of the world's best strategy games, this is the app to get.

Fun game but may be rigged?
Fri Aug 29 2025 Zoniedoc

I’ve enjoyed playing this, although I’d love to have the option of a human opponent. I am a very experienced backgammon player (60+ years and took courses in game theory at university level), so I like being challenged. There is no doubt the higher levels of computer opponents know most of the “tricks”, and I find it difficult to win every tournament. The daily challenge is fun but usually easy to win, since the computer’s strategy is at a low level. However, this brings me to my only complaint. While the dice should be completely randomised, I have noticed a pattern that periodically favours the computer. Every so often the number of “perfect” rolls benefiting the computer, and adverse rolls disadvantaging the player (i.e. me), are too significant to ignore. Yes, occasionally, I’ll get some unbelievably favourable rolls myself, as opposed to poor rolls for the computer. Nevertheless, it is frustrating to see the game clearly put a “thumb on the scale”. I don’t mind being outplayed; I just dislike those moments where I am disadvantaged in a way that doesn’t accord with true random chance.

It’s okay

I see I’m not the only person that things the game is a bit rigged. I win most every game, which is fine, but I notice that you can predict with near 100% accuracy what the machine is going to roll when you have an uncovered piece. Hint, it’s going to get your piece. I don’t think you ever play another human - which is the okay. The problem is that the machine plays a really poor game. When you double, the machine almost always declines. When you hit the auto play, the game moves at a speed that no once plays at and no one ever drops out mid game. So if you are looking for something that just passes the time, this game is fine. If you are looking to become a better player, this game isn’t for you. Update- after posting my review I received a snarky reply that the dice rolls are completely random. I completely disagree. At least three times a game I get the same roll three times in a row. While the computer/opposing player will get the exact roll needed to capture an uncovered piece in excess of 96% of the time. Yes, curiosity got the best of me and I kept track over the course of 20 games. I also found that when I would gammon my opponent, I stopped getting the multiplier - curious, it started after I wrote the first review. Now I’m just cranky. Avoid this game, it’s rigged.

Randomly not so random

So while this seems a little more realistic than other backgammon games available in the App Store it still suffers from the not so random dice roll generator. I understand losing games. I’m fine with that. It’s the constant losing I take issue with. The player you play against continually gets great rolls. If it was random the human player would also randomly great rolls. But that’s not the case. While the vs opponent gets a run that they need to put you in a no win situation it doesn’t come around to the player having the same run. The developers say it’s random but if it was random the player would randomly have a game that they stomp their opponent. That doesn’t happen with this game. It’s the constant stomping by the vs player that ruins it. After a bit it’s just no fun. Seeing your opponent roll high doubles 4 times in a game and you either get double 1s or no doubles at all. If you do roll double 6s it’s often when you’re on the rail or in a spot where you can’t move 6 pipes cause they aren’t available. I understand if it’s like this sometimes, but this is more often than sometimes. Still a smidge better than LotB, but not much. I’m not sure what the answer is. I just wish it was really random because you would randomly have a good game.

Needs Improvement

I like a lot of games from this developer so I wanted to give their backgammon a try. I’ve always wanted to learn and I liked the tutorial feature. However, once I completed the tutorial I was immediately thrown into gameplay against a computer opponent with no option to select a skill level (“novice” or “beginner” for example). From reading other reviews, it looks like that used to be a feature, so why did that go away? Now I find myself losing round after round as I’m still trying to figure out strategy against an opponent who is infinitely more “skilled” and always seems to have luckier dice rolls. (Also seeing a lot of negative reviews about the suspiciously lucky dice rolls by the opponent.) I’m not saying that I always have to win, but the dynamics don’t feel balanced. The dissatisfaction of feeling like I’m never going to get the hang of it makes me want to quit before I’ve really even gotten started. If only you could pick the skill level like you can with sudoku, I would rate it higher and stick with it instead of immediately deleting it.

I like the graphics, I like the movement. after playing many games, I have found that once you become comfortable playing the game the programmers screw you. I have played hundreds of thousands of games of backgammon (over 40+ years) but this program gets to a point where it only rolls doubles for the opponent whilst you can only roll unusable combinations. It's like all the current computer games which are designed to teach you the only winning hand is to delete the app. I could have predicted the response of the developer – in fact I did predict the response of the programmer. they claim everything is as a result of a random number generator – that may be true after they've eliminated certain combinations already, depending on whether it's the program player or the live player. it would have been a wonderful game if they programmed it straight -but when in multiple games in sequence, the computer rolls high doubles on every roll & the human is given low non-usuable combinations on EVERY roll - that's not random. I was just amazed at how many times that the computer snatched victory out of the jaws of defeat in many consecutive games. I finally figured out the correct winning strategy – I deleted the app.

Totally Unfair Game

I agree with ‘fun but frustrating’. I can lose up to 10 games in a row and every single roll the dice gives the opponent is perfection nearly every time. If you are “unlucky” enough to actually capture the opponent’s chip then you will either get gotten or they will roll doubles EVERY TIME! I noticed a lot too that whenever you aren’t covered they always have the opportunity to get you but sometimes don’t….until the next roll where you have another chip uncovered that benefits the opponent (and that’s because of the roll you were given). Most always the numbers on their doubles are twice as big as yours as well. I loved this game when I started playing it but now it frustrates me to no end to where I’m about to delete the app. I have played a whole lot of backgammon in real life and nobody, I mean nobody, ever has the perfect rolls all the time, time after time after time. I want to play, I don’t mind losing from time to time either, BUT up to 10 times in a row (and get slaughtered every time)????? Come on now. I’ve been playing this app for awhile but the developer(s) have taken the fun and ‘the challenge’ out of the game. Any way to fix this developer(s) to make it more fair to the challenger?????

bogus game
Mon May 05 2025 unfair spins

this game is so bogus! after playing a while, you can easily predict the spins. also, the opposing player gets numerous doubles of 5 and 6 while my spins rarely get. I can also predict right after I spin with the opponents spin is going to be. Now I know why the question is asked before you begin playing if you want easy medium, and hard because it’s all calculated based on the moves you make. The ads are also extremely annoying because it’s the same ad every time and it just makes the whole experience of playing this game extremely unpleasant. I have removed from my phone and found better backgammon apps. Easy brain is easily the worst. 2nd review: my review never got a response from the developer because they know my review is accurate. Developer, please stop telling everybody your spins are random. They are the furthest thing from random that you can do. If I can predict what every next role is going to be after I spin and purposely leave a man open to see if I get knocked out, I predict the spin and I am right. Stop lying to us and telling us that they’re random. They are not and you know it. Please give the players a little more credit, we are not stupid.

Definitely rigged..

UPDATE…. This game still shows favorably toward the computer… obviously others feel the exact same way… if it is designed to be the luck of the roll , then I am terribly unlucky… Quite frankly, it is unreal how unfair it appears 90% of the time…. I do not know enough of the behind the scenes…algorithms or whatever you call it… BUT something is not right! I have played tooooo many times for a very long time and everything is the same…almost predictable! Just saying…just a shame….😞 I have been playing for a while now. Although I do get doubles from time to time, it seems very rigged for the computer to always get 2 to 3 sets of doubles in the final quadrant. I have given it enough time to see if it equals out or balances out and it doesn’t. I have tried different ways of playing each game after I lose and inevitably the computer gives my opponent two and three sets of doubles in a row. It’s gotten to the point where it’s not fun anymore. I’m not a sore loser. But accept the challenge after I do lose to replay and try a different strategy. Time to move on…
